If you are anything like me, you have binged your way through most of the content on Netflix, or at the very least have heard about much buzzed shows like ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Narcos’ and ‘House of Cards’, to name a few. You do not need me to tell you these shows are cool, or binge worthy. But what happens when you have exhausted all your mainstream options? What’s worth watching next?
I’ve compiled what I think are the best low key Netflix shows – the best of the new, underrated and oftentimes eccentric shows that you’ll be adding to your list in no time. This weekend, cancel all your plans (because honestly, I know that’s what you secretly want to do), stay in and start on one of the shows below. Don’t forget to make yourself a nice whisky cocktail to match the flavour profile of your show’s content.
- Lovesick: A guy finds out he has an STD and has to contact all of his exes to let them know – cue hilarity through awkwardness. His two best friends go along for the ride and we see flashbacks over the years of his love life. Bonus, it’s filmed in Scotland, so you get some awesome Glasgow visuals.
- Paired with: Whisky Sour – after all, what brings a more sour taste to your mouth than finding out your ex has an STD?
- Crazyhead: two twenty something girls are thrust into a zombie adventure after discovering they have special abilities that can fight the zombies off, and ultimately save the planet – no biggie.
- Paired with: Mint Julep – a refreshing mix, just like the unlikely friendship and chemistry of the two leads.
- The Fall: A cat and mouse game between a sexy serial killer (trust me) and an agent who’s trying to capture him. What makes this so griping are the scenes the two leads have together – they don’t share the screen often, but when they do, it’s electric. Bonus: umm, Jamie Dornan and Gillian Anderson, need I say more?
- Paired with: Rusty Nail – you’ll need a strong drink to get through some of this content and also to reconcile with the fact that you’re weirdly attracted to a serial killer.
- Crashing (the British TV show): follows the lives of six 20 and 30 somethings living together as property guardians of a large, disused hospital. Like a dry, British ‘Friends’, with more complex characters and more convoluted scenarios.
- Paired with: Hot Toddy – hot and slightly spicey – just like when six hot blooded people share a residence.
- The Moody’s: A bumbling Australian extended family somehow finds a way to keep it together over the years with love as the underlying thread. Does your family put ‘fun’ in ‘dysfunctional’? You’ll appreciate this if you love your big, crazy family – and all the crazy characters in it – and have had more than your fair share of awkward family gatherings.
- Paired with: John Collins – a little bitter, a little sweet, and slightly watered down – just how you wish every family get together would function.
What are your favourite underrated Netflix binges?
Happy watching! Cheers!
